Hip prosthesis

At the European Hip Center we use two types of hip prostheses:

• **Total hip prosthesis (THA): the worn hip joint is replaced by an implant with a titanium stem, a ceramic head and a titanium cup with polyethylene inlay. Proven long-term results: 95% chance the prosthesis lasts at least 25 years. We place it via the muscle-sparing DAA approach** (Efficient Direct Anterior).
• **Resurfacing prosthesis (RSP or sports hip): only the surface of the femoral head and acetabulum is replaced. The patient's own femoral head and neck are preserved. We deliberately choose a ceramic-on-ceramic** variant, not metal-on-metal. Especially suited to young, active patients who want to keep loading their hip heavily.

Which prosthesis fits you?: the choice between THA and RSP depends on several factors: your age, sex, activity level, shape and size of the femoral head, and any additional conditions.

• A **total hip prosthesis** is the standard solution and suits most patients with advanced hip osteoarthritis.
• A **resurfacing prosthesis** is an option for young, active patients with good bone quality and a sufficiently large femoral head. In Belgium the RSP is only reimbursed for male patients under 55 with a femoral head diameter of at least 50 mm.

During the consultation we discuss which prosthesis will give the best long-term result for your specific situation.

Our approach: both prostheses are placed using a muscle-sparing technique, according to the anterior approach.
